Craftsmen and folk-wear makers’ workshop invites you to visit

the Homestead of Latvian life-wisdom and crafts

A little bit about the house...

We are in a restored historic wooden house that has been granted the status of an architectural monument of national significance. The building’s research materials show its history from the 2nd half of the 18th century, but building testimony at the site dates back to 1652. After restoration the house retains the planning of earlier times and 18th and 19th century wall decorations.
The heating ovens, stove, bakery oven and building’s pride – the mantel chimney, which is the only known restored mantel chimney in Jelgava, have been restored.

Exploring Latvian cultural and historical heritage

Guided tours in the restored 18th century wooden building with a story about its history through the centuries.
  • Learn about the layout of the building, its use in the past and today, related historical events. You will feel like a resident of this building from the 17th century to the present day, discover the nuances of the bakers’ and weavers’ work.
  • Visit the weaver’s workshop, see the looms with a draw device, P. Vilumsons’ semi-automatic looms, other looms and weavers’ work accessories, see how the folk costume is made and try out weaving and other handicraft skills yourself.

We weave on handlooms various woolen and linen fabrics for Latvian national costumes, interior decorations, etc. We try to use the old craft skills and work tools from 19th to beginning of 20th century.
